5 PM 20th Annual Festival of Harps
Celebration of Harps

Join over 40 harpists and their unique styles of harp music in the Festival of Harps' 20th Anniversary Celebration. This walk-through concert at the Chapel of the Chimes, one of the wonders of Bay Area architecture, was inspired by the “ Garden of Memory ” Solstice concert, which attracts thousands annually. The Chapel was originally designed by Julia Morgan, who also designed the Hearst Castle at San Simeon and many other classic California buildings. It contains over a hundred rooms and corners decorated in a style evocative of gothic cathedrals, and each of these rooms makes a perfect location for a small intimate concert. The audience walks from room to room through marble statues, flowers, and walls decorated with stone carvings, mosaics, and bronze plaques. They follow a map of the different rooms and floors of the building to locate whatever harp music they wish to hear next--Celtic, Renaissance, African, Latin, Scandinavian, Asian, Medieval, Classical, Jazz, Modern. Faint echoings of the other harp music whisper in the background as you listen to the concert being performed before you, because each musical group will do a full concert at its particular location. Who you wish to see, and when you wish to hear them, will be up to you. Click here for a complete list of performers.

2:30 PM Mark your calendar: The SF Guzheng Music Society will present its 27th Annual Concert, co-sponsored with the Chinese Culture Center. In this 2009 version, the Society will again, under the music direction of Weishan Liu, present a well-balanced program of music, songs and dances. Its acclaimed guzheng ensembles -- the Golden Flowers, Purple Orchids, and Cherry Blossoms -- in collaboration of other members, will be performing both classical and popular music from the 30's and songs of Teresa Teng. Songs such as "Xiang Si He Pan" (相思河畔) and "Xiao Cheng De Gu Shi" (小城的故事) will certainly evoke a sense of nostalgia among the more mature members of the audience. There will be classical and regional music, including "Cai Yun Zhui Yue" (彩雲追月) and "Moonlight Over Spring River (春江花月夜) which will be accompanied by poetry recital of "Hua Mu Lan" (花木蘭). Western songs will be presented as well, such as "The Beautiful Sky", a Spanish popular song; and the popular Disney piece "Color of the Wind". Additionally, there will be performances by the Annie Leung Dance Studio, Gary Schwantes' jazz combo Ultra World XTET, and Winnie Wong’s China’s Spirit Music Ensemble. The winner of the Sing Tao singing competition, Rockson Yan, will be giving a special performance. There also will be a fashion show performed by Global Entertainment and Salon 2000.
